With graduation looming, people I know have started to ask me what I am going to do. Well, I guess the obvious answer is start interviewing.. Then they ask where. Where? Well, there are a few firms in Portland I would love to work for.. "Are you going to look for anything outside of Oregon?" Now, this seems a little crazy to me. Why would I leave Oregon? Oregon is great! Portland could have used a little more (and by a little, I mean a lot) sunshine this summer, but otherwise, it is a fantastic place to live.
However, now this has me thinking. Where would I want to live besides Portland/Oregon? Of course I would jump at any job abroad, but what about here in the US? I need trees and water in my life, I need immediate access to nature. Although New York is incredible, I wanted to die after spending three weeks there.
So I am wondering what great places with an active design community exist in this country?
Chicago is a beautiful city with plenty to offer in the way of both career opportunity and recreational opportunity. There are no mountains but there are lots of trees and lots of water. I can definitely see you there. And Milwaukee is just to the north! :)
ReplyDeleteSpeaking from personal experience, it's difficult to leave a place that holds such a strong personal connection. I don't know if I'll ever be able to let go of Wisconsin. I still dream of moving back eventually. As great as other places can be, it's never going to replace true home.
I recommend at least entertaining the idea of moving away. You never know what may come of it!
Thanks mr. mark! I just might.
