So I have this fantasy of someday traveling by barge through the canals in the English countryside. In my fantasy I have children, but since I don't currently have children, I may not want to wait till they exist. The canal systems in England are vast and you can mozy down them on a rented flat bottom boat for a week or two.
When I was working in England for a bit I loved to watch the barges pull into Stratford Upon Avon. Kids would jump off to open the locks as their parents steered the big floating vacation home on through. What a lovely time! Pull into Stratford and hop off for dinner and a Shakespearean play.
My dad and I, along with two of my friends and their dads, once did a houseboat vacation in northern Wisconsin. It wasn't English canals but it was amazing nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I've been to Stratford upon Avon! Cute little town. I bought a ring there that was lost long ago to the depths of Lake Michigan during a late night skinny dip.
Woah, your post has conjured up three great memories for me. Thanks! :)
